G20 Summit Highlights: 'Historic' Event Concludes; PM Modi Expresses Confidence in Brazil's Presidency

The G20 leaders’ declaration “confirms” Russia’s isolation on the Ukraine crisis and India’s presidency of the bloc did its best to send across a message of unity and peace to the world, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Sunday.

At a media briefing, he also said that the G20 is not a forum for political discussions and that a “vast majority” of countries of the grouping have “condemned” the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

As the national capital hosted the G20 Summit over the weekend, the 24×7 helpline of Delhi Traffic Police received 2,500 calls per day, six times the daily average, officials said on Sunday.

“On normal days prior to the G20 Summit, the helpline at the Public Interface Unit (PIU) received an average of about 400 calls per day. During the Summit, the unit received 2,500 calls per day from Thursday to Sunday. A G20 Traffic Virtual Helpdesk was established, which has been visited by more than 1.63 lakh people,” the Delhi Traffic Police (DTP) said in a statement.  Police further said that the WhatsApp Helpline received 2,000 queries per day, whereas Delhi Traffic Police’s handle on microblogging site X provided clarifications to more than 75 queries during this time.

US President Joe Biden on Sunday said he held “substantial discussions” with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on ways to strengthen the Indo-US partnership and thanked him for his leadership and hosting the G20 Summit in New Delhi.

Biden told reporters here in the Vietnamese capital that he also raised the importance of respecting human rights with Prime Minister Modi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday made a renewed push for expansion of the UN Security Council and reforms in global institutions to reflect world’s “new realities”, as the G20 summit concluded here with world leaders lauding India’s presidency for ensuring several tangible outcomes.

Marking the ceremonial transfer of the rotational G20 presidency, Prime Minister Modi handed over the gavel to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who hailed India for giving voice to topics of interests of emerging economies. Lula also said the UN Security Council needs new developing countries as permanent and non-permanent members to regain political strength and greater representation for emerging countries at the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has not been able to leave at his scheduled time, as his plane suffered a technical snag. Trudeau is likely to stay in India till the issue is fixed.

Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar spoke about the G20 summit saying, “as proud Indians, we hold our heads high today.”

PM Modi on Sunday held deliberations with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol.

As he arrived at the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was greeted with a massive crowd.

Union Minister Ashwani Vaishnav told CNN-News18 that PM Narendra Modi’s vision for the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor was easily accepted by so many countries.

Speaking on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, Union Minister Ashwani Vaishnav told CNN-News18 that the mega project will be “very bankable” for India and that many multilateral institutions are planning to join it.

As he concluded the 2-day G20 Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday evening arrived at the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.

United States President Joe Biden on Sunday equated the Indian-American ties to Mahatma Gandhi’s Principals.

“The partnership between India and the United States is rooted in Mahatma Gandhi’s principal of trusteeship – trusteeship that is shared between our countries and for our shared planet,” Biden said on X.

PM Modi on Sunday met Brazilian President and said ties between India and Brazil are very strong.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the “historic success” of India’s G20 presidency, saying the summit leaves an indelible victory mark for every citizen of the country who believes in the greatness of Indian benevolent cultural values.

The G20 Summit came to an end on Sunday. The grouping of emerging and developed economies adopted the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration through consensus and included African Union as a permanent member of the bloc.

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva on Sunday said global recovery is slow and uneven and underscored the need to pursue sound policies for financial stability and growth-oriented structural reforms.

Speaking at G20 Leaders’ Summit here, Georgieva said, G20 members must lead by example in delivering on the promises of USD 100 billion per year for climate finance, supported by strengthening Multilateral Development Banks(MDBs).

With the conclusion of the summit, Shah Rukh Khan congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for headlining India’s Presidency.

He wrote, “Congratulations to Hon. PM @narendramodi ji for the success of India’s G20 Presidency and for fostering unity between nations for a better future for the people of the world. It has brought in a sense of honour and pride into the hearts of every Indian. Sir, under your leadership, we will prosper not in isolation but in Oneness. One Earth, One Family, One Future…”

PM Modi on Sunday said that he had a very good meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and thanked him for “enriching the G20 Summit with his views.”

🔺Brazil will formally assume the G20 Presidency on December 1 this year.

🔺The presidency will be transferred on the night of November 30, when the passwords of all domain and sites would be handed over to Brazil.

🔺Post this, Brazil will be responsible for controlling websites, social media platforms and all domains of the G20.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday extended full support to Brazil and expressed confidence that its presidency will take forward the shared goals of the G20 bloc.

“India passes the gavel to Brazil. We have unwavering faith that they will lead with dedication, vision and will further global unity as well as prosperity,” Modi said.

PM Modi on Sunday said that he met Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and talked about ways to further strengthen bilateral ties.
