Earlier this year at Google I/O 2023, it was clear that the company intends to double down on its generative AI ambitions by adding new AI-centric features to its lineup of products.
Now, the search giant has introduced a new ‘Proofread’ feature for beta users of the Gboard keyboard for Android. The feature, as reported by 9to5Google, is currently available starting with Gboard version 13.4 and appears in Gboard’s toolbar.
As the name suggests, the feature exists to proofread your text for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors. Users may do so by just a tap, Google says. Google also notes that to proofread your text, it must send the text to itself and then process it to suggest grammar and writing improvements.
So, if you don’t want to share your text data with Google, it’s best to avoid this feature. But, in all fairness, this feature could help people quickly identify errors in their text with the help of generative AI without having to go to a different application such as Google own Bard, or another generative AI-based chatbot like ChatGPT, and even legacy grammar correction softwares.
As for availability, it isn’t clear when the widespread rollout could happen, but considering the feature has already been made available for beta users, the full rollout may not be too far ahead, and could be rolled out soon.
In related news, Google launched new formatting features for Google Keep. This will let users format their notes in different ways to make them more organized. Users will be able to customize and emphasize your text by bolding, underlining, italicizing, and using heading styles.
