Vintage racing in events such as the Goodwood Revival and the Monterey Motorsports Reunion may sound like a drag. But, bear in mind, it is no less dangerous than any other form of racing. This was showcased for all to witness when former Formula 1 driver Karun Chandhok found himself engulfed in fire, when he was racing a one-of-36 Ferrari 250 GTO at the Goodwood Revival.

The Goodwood Revival is in full swing for 2023. Jenson Button, Johnny Herbert, Mark Webber, and Karun Chandhok among many others raced in the iconic event. But, all hell broke loose when Chandhok’s car went up in flames.

He was racing in fourth position and during a turn, the car started to spew fire, as Chandhok also seemingly lost control of the car.

However, Chandhok showed immense alertness as he avoided what could have been a lethal mishap.

The car spun a whole 360 degreees after which Chandhok regained control and drove the vehicle onto the grass away from the track to make a quick escape.

The car may be damaged, but the situation went about as well as it possibly could for both Chandok and the 250 GTO.

All was well in the end and Chandhok took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to let his fans know that he was indeed fine, except for his shoes which had melted due to the extreme heat inside the burning vehicle.

Chandhok wrote, “Lucky to get away with that with nothing more than a melted boot…. Something went bang and seized up the back wheels and sent me spinning. Such a shame to end a race in my dream GT car like that but happy to get out ok!"
