Australia and the Philippines have agreed to hold annual defence ministers' meetings as the two nations upgraded bilateral ties to a strategic partnership. Australian PM Anthony Albanese signed the deal with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. during his trip to Manila. The strategic partnership deal between Canberra and Manila comes amid rising security tensions in the region, including in the South China Sea. Under a strategic partnership, the countries will seek to expand cooperation in several areas from defence to security and climate change. Canberra’s backing of Manila comes over overlapping maritime claims between China and the Philippines in the disputed South China Sea.
