Motorists who violate speed limits on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway will now face stiffer enforcement as 430 sophisticated cameras are installed in 106 places. This advancement is a critical component of the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation’s (MSRDC) Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) project, which is scheduled to be finished by mid-October.
“We’ve already initiated the process of erecting gantries along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. Our goal is to complete the installation of 430 cutting-edge CCTV cameras at 106 key spots by mid-October. These state-of-the-art cameras will be interconnected through an optical fibre to a central control room,” MSRDC’s joint managing director, Sanjay Yadav told Mid-Day.
Explaining further about the new project, MSRDC’s joint managing director, Yadav asserted that the ITMS will be used to record different traffic infractions such as reckless driving, lane changes, excessive speeding, wrong-way driving, motorway stops, as well as driving in incorrect lane, among others.
According to Pune.News, the initiative or project adheres to the Built Operate and Transfer (BOT) concept, with MSRDC enlisting employees from the transport and police sectors to supervise and penalise offenders. The large network of high-tech CCTV cameras, such as night vision cameras, will make violation of expressway speed restrictions difficult.
The Mumbai Highway Traffic Management System (HTMS) will enforce numerous offences via the HTMS system. Excessive speeding, wrong entries (no entry), lane discipline violations, cell phone use, vehicles without taillights and reflectors, illegal stoppages, wrong-way driving, seat belt non-compliance, pedestrian crossings, unauthorised fancy number plates, overloaded vehicles, and two-wheelers in restricted areas are some of the examples.
In addition, the HTMS system will include a spot and average speed detection system at 39 locations, as well as a lane discipline violation detection system at 34 places. It will also have weigh-in-motion systems for commercial vehicles at all motorway entrances. Furthermore, all toll booths will have an automatic vehicle counter and classifier, automatic number plate recognition, and violation detection cameras for penalty collection.
A command-and-control centre, as well as additional observation areas, will be created in Lonavala to oversee these operations. All camera feeds will be available online for the officials in charge. There will also be provisions for citizen participation and penalty collecting, such as a mobile-responsive website, kiosks at various locations, variable message signs, and SMS notifications.
The violation challans will be generated promptly and certified by officials, with all proof (pictures, videos, and so on) connected to the infraction and forwarded to the vehicle owner.
This project intends to improve road safety, traffic management, and law enforcement on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, making it a safer and more disciplined route for passengers.
