It holds the Guinness world record for the highest ratio between a film’s budget, and its gross collection. The film also had the world record for the highest-grossing independent film ever until it was taken by My Big Fat Greek Wedding in 2002. As per reports, the shoot for the film was completed in eight days, but it took eight months to complete the editing.

A franchise was launched by the makers which includes the films, Book of Shadows released in 2000, and The Blair Witch, which came out in 2016. The film revived and popularized the found footage technique in horror films. It inspired other successful horror films like Paranormal Activity and Cloverfield.

The movie was initially called The Black Hills Project, and then it was changed to The Blair Witch Tapes. Finally, it was titled The Blair Witch Project.
